Winter and Spring and Other Things

... are fighting for supremacy. We've had temps in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, but not in that order. On four of the last eight days, we've had steady rains. In three of those, we've also had hail and strong winds.

We're still getting lows in the mid-30s, intermixed with lows in the mid-40s. And of course, there's still snow on the ground in shady, north-facing areas.

Three weeks ago, we had a foot of snow on the ground in our yard. Now we have leaves on the trees, the grass is greening up, and there are weeds a foot tall.

So we're going to put the cushions on the deck furniture on Friday evening, and this weekend we'll sit out on the deck. Even if we have to wear jackets. And perhaps Spring will be convinced to plow ahead by our stubbornness and resiliency.

Or it won't. :)

On the home front, my wife's cast was removed three weeks ago, and she's been going to physical therapy twice weekly since then. She gets around the house pretty well in her sock feet, but still wears a walking boot and cane when outside.

She also tripped over one of the cats yesterday morning and fell down, twisting the ankle a bit. There's no apparent damage nor lasting effects other than some residual soreness. In her defense, the cat decided to lie down and roll over onto its back as D approached.

So life goes on up here. We're starting to get out and about a bit more, including booking a trip to a Navy reunion in Gatlinburg in September, and finally going back to Hawaii next spring.

Sleepless in Alaska

We had all three kittens spayed yesterday. They're 7-month-old siblings, with weights ranging from 7.5 to nearly 13 pounds.

They survived the ordeal just fine, until they got back home. The vet's office loaned us three cones o' shame, and the cats Did. Not. Like. It.

Picture three drunken furballs cannonballing backward around the house, crashing into furniture, walls, stairs, lamp poles, and various figurines in a vain attempt to shed the eeeeevil restraints.

Drunken? Well, that's verbal shorthand (obviated now, of course) for "just coming out of general anesthesia."  That's code for, "stagger three times and fall over".

In between waves of nigh-unconsciousness, they would get a spurt of energy, whereupon the cannonballing began.

The cones are about 3/4" too long for the kittehs' faces, so they couldn't eat or drink. Not good. We found some inflatable collars at one of the chain stores. They're held in place primarily by looping the cats' collars through them.

Our cats don't have collars, so the inflatable armored donuts don't work.

This is all a verbose way of saying that we didn't get much sleep last night.

Not enough of this today.

Growth & the Fuzzballs

Apparently the little fuzzballs do get bigger. When we got them in early June, they were the size of beanie babies.
July 4 - Ginger, Wasabi, and Miso (looking out the window)
August 30 - they still sleep together, but space is somewhat more limited. :)

God's Word for Wednesday, 6/19/19

Our three new cats are here. They're still tiny, at seven weeks old, because they should have been started on solid food about three weeks ago. That only happened on Monday, but their development should really take off, now.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Ephesians 5:25-26 KJV

Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church—a love marked by giving, not getting. Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They’re really doing themselves a favor—since they’re already “one” in marriage.
Ephesians 5:25-26 MSG

Another Mystery Solved?

My daughters have cats. I like cats for the most part, and tolerate them the rest of the time. But one thing about felines of all stripes (bad pun alert) had puzzled me, along with other cat owners, for years.

Cats will fuss, scrape, push, nudge, and otherwise have a kittyfit when they encounter a closed door. However, opening the door for them is only a temporary solution, as they come from the other side & want it open again.

Careful consideration (note I didn't say "long" consideration) yields the following answer: cats don't want in OR out.  They want through.

Saturday Morning Wake-Up Call

We had an earthquake with our morning coffee ... a 5.73, which made the apartment sway for well over a minute. Lamps & the windchime by the picture window were swaying, and we could feel it for quite awhile.

I've checked the University's 'quake website, and it was located in Cook Inlet southwest of Homer. So it was about 160 miles or so to the south/southwest of here. I imagine Homer received a good shaking for a minute or two...

The cats were funny: Alex took off running toward the stairs, as if to discover who was shaking the upstairs. Gracie stayed in one spot, but had her neck stretched out nearly as long as her body, with dilated eyeballs. Funny li'l critters.

It's about 20 degrees this morning, and AccuHunch is guessing we'll get a couple inches of snow today. It's to be warmer (near 30) tomorrow with a little more snow tomorrow, and will then turn cold for the upcoming week.

That's about all the news that's fit to print; have a good one!
