Half-truth #1: Oil production is the highest it has been in eight years.
Increased oil and gas production in the U.S. is a great development, but this is a result of increased production on private lands in North Dakota, Texas, and Alaska. On federal lands and offshore, the story is much grimmer. Production on federal lands and offshore could have yielded more output, increasing supply and therefore putting downward pressure on oil prices. Poor administrative decisions—such as refusing to open areas to exploration and production, cancelling or delaying lease sales, and the offshore drilling moratorium and subsequent “permitorium”—significantly reduced oil production, destroying jobs and reducing economic activity in the process.

Friday: A Chilly Edition
Good morning. It's 7 below at my place, and there are several spots around Anchorage even colder. But that's nothing compared to the rest of the state: yesterday morning it was -49 in North Pole, and -41 at the Fairbanks airport. That's cold, right there; I don't care who y'are.
I see in the local news that out-of-state enviro-nazis and some Alaska native groups have filed yet another round of lawsuits to stop oil & gas exploration in the Chukchi Sea (northwest Alaska coast). These same groups will cry bloody murder when the gas prices go above $10 a gallon in that area; apparently they live in some universe where cause and effect don't apply.

A Nice Surprise
The price of gasoline has been slowly ... very, very slowly ... coming down. Yesterday, most of the stations in Anchorage were in the $3.67 to $3.69 range. I decided to wait one more day, because the station I use typically lowers it price (if there's to be a reduction) on Mondays.
Today, many of the stations are back up to $3.75, but mine was still at $3.69, at drive-time. But that's not the nicest surprise. Due to purchases at the affiliated supermarket, we were entitled to a 50-cent discount. $3.19/gallon sure did make me smile.
And Ol' Green was grateful, too.
This will be its last winter ferrying us around southcentral Alaska; we'll be shopping for a replacement, come Spring.

Market Forces? I Don't Think So
It's interesting, this government- and speculation-fueled* rush to raise gasoline prices. As a resident of Alaska, perennially Number Two on the list of highest gas prices (sorry, Hawaiians), it's quite informative to see prices on the East Coast so much higher than here.
Prices here never went down, the last time y'all enjoyed gas in the $2.00+ range. We hovered around the $3.25 mark for the last 18 months, give or take, and have only just gone up to our current price of $3.76 [now $3.83 - Ed.].
So when I read that gas in Orlando was $4.05 at stations near their airport, last week, it was surprising.
Yes, the price at the pump is driven by speculation on oil futures. Oil futures, in turn, are driven by the availability of oil coming to market. And when government won't allow drilling, there's less oil coming.
So don't blame the oil companies, for - at least, this time - it's not their fault.
* Bad pun alert ... a bit late, but there it is.

Winds in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley (the borough to the north) hit near 50 and 75 mph, respectively, yesterday. The oil port of Valdez had gusts of 95 mph, with damage reported to many of its buildings. It remains windy there today, with gusts expected in the 65 mph range.

Saturday in the A.M.
We only got about 3" of snow overnight (darn it) with lots of blowing & minor drifting. There's more in the forecast for the next several days, but it's not going to impress anyone on the east coast. The only difference is, any snow we get now will be on the ground until April. If we got the 30+" that some places were hammered by, it would be here until May. The sled dog racers and their fans, skiers and snowmachiners would all love it. So would I.
I have the range bag packed (pistol only, today). Time to go knock the rust off.
Meadow commented on gas prices, in a reply to my previous post. Gas prices were $3.22 here this week, which is the lowest we've seen in quite awhile. Hers fell to $3.21 yesterday in the Mat-Su Valley (out Wasilla way), so ours may fall even farther. When prices when to $2.something in the Lower 48, ours stayed well above $3. IIRC - and that's frequently in doubt - the current price is the lowest in over a year.
I'm going to try to take pictures of myself, shooting. If I don't post any, later, you'll know it didn't work.

New Year's Eve, 2009 (Updated)
Good morning! It's clear and 13 degrees at 7:00 a.m.; still a bit warmer than normal, but that situation is being remedied, or so AccuHunch guesses. We're supposed to be in single digits by tonight.
Alaskans had a chance to see a partial lunar eclipse this morning, along with the 'blue' moon - the second full moon of the month. I didn't see (or run into) any moose this morning, though; that's an improvement over yesterday's near miss.
Update: here's this morning's eclipse (photo from Anchorage Daily News).
The sunrises this week have been particularly striking, although I don't know why. Here's a picture from Tuesday morning, taken from the top floor of our building (h/t Sandy).
A state senator is calling again for a new law to regulate the gas prices statewide. We've been at $3.28/gallon for the last couple of months, down from $3.31. The price never dropped when the rest of the country saw big decreases. It seems our local refineries think drivers should help them make up for losses the refiners suffered on aviation fuel. Cry me a river: it seems Stevens International Airport sold a record amount of avgas last month. Stevens is the busiest cargo airport in the world, and the refiners think we're stupid. Go for it, Senator.
I pray that 2010 will be a better year than 2009 for this nation, but I'm not sure it will be. There's too much greed, corruption, and rampant socialism in the District ofCriminals Columbia (and the various alphabet agencies, with their continued disregard for, and depredations against our remaining civil liberties) for the outlook to be favorable.
That being said, I want to emphasize that now is not the time to lose heart or faith. Those who know God, and know who they are, must stand firm and join together with other like-minded conservative folks. We must be strong and determined, and remember Who we serve. Our Lord watches over those who serve Him, and commands His angels to guard their ways.

Wednesday A.M.: a Quick Note
Good morning. Blogging may be light or heavy, over the next several days, depending on family activities or the lack thereof.
It's 23 degrees this morning, and our fiends at AccuHunch (that's not a misspelling) say we should get "up to three inches" of snow today. We are aware that "up to" includes zero. But whatchagonnado?
I noticed that regular gas has dropped three cents to $3.28/gallon. That's the first change in price in over two months, as nearly as my somewhat-unreliable memory can make it.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful and fulfilling Thanksgiving holiday. Thanks for stopping by.

Friday Follies
Or, Let the Spin Begin!
How many ways can the Fringe Media spin the Epic Fail of the Lobbyist-in-Chief? I know - it was because South America has never had an Olympics! Right? Am I right?
Come on, people: it's not like Chicago lost a squeaker to Rio ... they didn't even come close. What a joke this whole public relations fiasco has been.
The only problem is that the joke's on all of us.

There is a LOT of new snow in the mountains, today. And after 7 1/2 hours of sunshine, the temperature has only made it to 44 degrees. The wind has caused a slow-but-steady shower of leaves today, too. One good windstorm would take most of the leaves down, now.

Gasoline prices have slipped just a bit, falling to $3.23 per gallon. That's not much of a break, but we'll take what we can get. My truck is down to a half-tank, and that's 16 gallons I'll have to pump back in there, over the weekend.
It's been a long week, and I'm tired of staring at a computer. It's time to put my feet up & read a good book.

Minor Anniversary Update
On this date in 1973, I reported to Great Lakes Naval Training Center to begin boot camp.
I told you it was a minor anniversary ...

Other things: last weekend, when we traveled to Seward for the wildlife cruise, gas in Anchorage was $2.93. There was a lot of grumbling about that price - what is it? 30 cents higher than the national average? - until we got to Seward.
In Seward, gas was $3.29 per gallon. No more complaints from us.
* * * * *
The Anchorage Daily Noise, er, News is starting to report stories other than those about Sarah Palin. Unfortunately, it appears these are the dog days of summer, for us, and nothing much of interest is happening.
There's this - a couple of guys pulled in this 90-lb king salmon from the Kenai River.

We have 63 degrees this morning, but the sunny skies have turned cloudy, and AccuHunch is alleging some rain might be sticking around for most of the upcoming week.
It's quiet, otherwise. My wife & younger daughter have gone to be pampered at a local salon. I was planning to climb out onto the overhang above the garage & wash the living room window. Since rain is forecast, I suppose it will have to wait until next weekend. If the glass is to be cleaned, I'd like it to last for more than a day.

I have accepted the task of helping with the layout - and perhaps an occasional post - on a new site about Sarah Palin. Several bloggers from around the country will be contributing posts; give Palination a look if you're interested.

Gas Goes Up Again
$2.73 as of today. The price of oil has only gone up $5/barrel (give-or-take) but gas has risen by 18 cents/gallon. This is getting old, but there's no end in sight, and complaining has never helped.
Oh, well ... even when it was well over $4/gallon, last year, I didn't drive a LOT less. I combined trips more often than not, though, just like everyone else.
The new alternator seems to have positively affected the horsepower of ye olde truck. I'm guessing the old one was producing low voltage for some time. This is good; a hotter spark means better economy.
Just in time, it seems.

A Quiet Monday
Good morning!
It's sunny & 42 degrees this morning: just about perfect. The dust is already making things hazy, and we could sure use some rain. I washed the grime & ashy grit off my truck this morning, but it will need it again in a couple of days.
Naturally enough, the automated car wash didn't want to operate, and displayed a message reading, "Please wait! Equipment not ready." I called the local number and, in the manner of a minor miracle, the attendant was actually on-site. He was able to reset the equipment so that I was only sitting there for about four or five minutes after paying, before I could enter the wash.
While I was in the wash bay, I got a call from the charge nurse at our surgery center. Power had gone off in one of the ORs, with a patient on the table. Since I was being circled by automatic equipment, I couldn't exit.
They were able to run some extension cords to address the immediate problem, and I got to my building about 10 minutes late. None of the breakers had tripped, so they called the electrical contractor to diagnose the problem.

Mt. Redoubt has been slowly quieting down, seismically speaking, since the middle of last week. However, the Volcano Observatory scientists are warning us today that the lava dome is becoming increasingly unstable, and they still expect another eruption with little or no warning.

Gasoline went up another two cents to $2.49/gallon over the weekend. Jolly stuff. The State government hasn't yet realized that raising the taxes on oil production results in higher pump prices. Yay.

TGIF
Good morning & Happy Friday! For the believers among you, it's Good Friday on the church calendar. Whether you believe Jesus was crucified on Wednesday or Friday of Passover Week in Jerusalem, it wasn't particularly good for Him. Just for us!
It's uncomfortably warm this morning ... I just looked, and it's 33 degrees. Now before you kill yourselves laughing at that statement, I would point out that everything is relative to where you are, and what you're used to.
We've had unseasonably cool weather for the last couple of months, and have suddenly warmed up to slighty above normal. Believe me, it feels warm - to us.
The snow is melting fairly rapidly now, due to several days with highs in the low 40s. As much as we love winter, and the beauty that a thick blanket of snow brings to the otherwise-barren countryside, we're ready for it to be gone. (There has been snow on the ground since November.)

The Only-In-Anchorage Dept.: the morning traffic report includes warnings of two pairs of moose near the Glen Highway (coming into town from the north). Drivers, ye be warned!

I am quite happy for this week to be winding down. It's time to get out & do something, and finally the weather is cooperating. Our plans include getting the studded snow tires off of the truck. Next week, we'll do the same thing to my wife's car, but that will involve the purchase of a new set of summer tires.
Our gas prices have gone up this week to $2.40, from $2.31 last weekend. I may have mentioned that before, but it still rankles a bit. Oh, well. My wife & I both work closer to home now than we did six months ago, so that's a good bit of timing there! My weekly commute now totals only130 65 miles, versus 210 105 miles before. There's quite a savings there, gasoline-wise. (And thanks to Joated, who questioned the original numbers. Important safety tip: don't operate a calculator without having had some sleep, first.)
That's about it for now, folks! Don't lose hope - don't despair - we know Who's in charge!

Foggy Again
Our weather pattern appears to be stuck. Although it has warmed into the double digits (currently 12 degrees) we have ... drum roll, please ... dense freezing fog. Ta-da!
There's a chance of snow, which is not much of a stretch for Anchorage in December. The visibility is poor (again, no surprise there) and caution is advised.
Go figure.
The biggest news story of the morning, other than the dense fog advisory, is the torching of the church which Gov. Palin's family attends, in Wasilla. Some ivory-skulled lunkhead probably thinks he/she is doing the Obama camp a favor by burning a church building. Don't waste your time trying to figure that out ... if it were rational, it wouldn't have happened.
Our gasoline remains at $2.43/gallon, for no apparent reason other than greedy refiners. Family in Missouri told us their prices went from $1.39 to $1.59 over the weekend; again, apparently unrelated to the actual cost of oil. No one will admit to knowing why ...
The local #1 TV station continues its 90-minute morning broadcast in the other room, despite the annoyance of a lack of significant stories. No matter: they simply recycle reports from last week as if they were new.
