Where Have You Been, Rev. Paul?

Long time, no write. Not very much, anyway.

Let's see:

a) Getting used to working three midnight shifts/week. I know I need the exercise after spending most of the last 15 years on desk duty, but ...

b) Sleeping (see a above)

c) Had to get the studded winter tires off of my truck as soon as we returned from Hawaii, because the deadline was May 1st. (Note: I'm the last person in the family to switch to studless tires, since I got them after buying the truck 4 years ago. Everyone else has a newer vehicle, purchased more recently.)

d) Dealing with a burst water pipe in the lower level understair closet. The frost-free spigot appears to have worn a hole in the side of the pipe. The water only spews when the spigot is turned on, outside ... which is how we found out about it. That, and the small river which came flowing out from beneath the closet door. Fortunately that closet contained mostly totes, which stayed more-or-less dry.

e) Did I mention sleeping? Naps have become a new hobby, it seems.

f) And now that the snow is gone, picking up literally hundreds of branches in the yard. That's going to take awhile.

Okay, NOW We're Tired

My wife and I both worked full days today, then came home and tackled the snow in the driveway. The long winter season, the amount of snow we've gotten this time 'round (above average), and the comings and goings of four vehicles, have contributed to quite a series of ridges and hollows for the length of the drive. All 275' of it.

Consequently, it's getting more difficult to wrestle the snowblower back and forth.

The snowplow (i.e., a large dump truck with a humongous blade) had already plowed both ends of the driveway closed. These new berms were 16" to 18" high, and four feet wide. That "adequate" snowblower I described in previous posts, almost wasn't.

If we weren't trying to pay off our upcoming hotel vacation stays in advance - a sizable chunk - I'd have ordered the new snow-beast already.

I'm pretty sure my nonstop narrative about the snow is less-than-fascinating for most of you, if not all. Sorry 'bout that. That topic pretty much dominates our lives during the heavy snowfall season.

And if all the above weren't enough, it seems there's a short in the 120-volt circuit for my truck's block heater. I've tried different extension cords, but the GFCI receptacle continues to trip no matter which one I use. Younger Daughter's works just fine, for the record, so that only leaves mine. And it's supposed to be -7 tonight. Oh well, at least the auto-start still works. :)

Thanks for stopping by, friends.

The Best-Laid Plans ...

Et cetera, et cetera.

This morning's plan was to pick up a new bed for Younger Daughter. That turned into two beds, as Older Daughter wanted one, too.

And then a sofa with chaise lounge was added to the mix. So we brought the beds home first, unloaded a wife and daughter, and O.D. and I went back for the sofa.

Two trips, twice the daughter time (good) and twice the crazy drivers (bad). Traffic was quite light; I'm guessing most were holed up to watch Lady Gag-Me ruin the half-time show.

The instant ratings, if they were reported truthfully, would be quite interesting. I wonder if we'll ever know how many tuned away at half-time, and how many of those stayed away for the rest of the game.

Then of course we had to bring all that furniture in. The two mattresses went to the third floor, and the old ones back down to the garage. Then the old sofa came out of the family room, thankfully on the ground floor, and the new one in.

That required that the man-door between the family room and garage be taken down. It has the spring-loaded hinges which slam the door shut, since it's part of the fire-protection envelope.

It required a large flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the hinge open again, and I had to use both hands to hold it flat against the door frame, while a second person drove in the first couple of screws. And the third person held the door upright, balanced on a stack of shims, to achieve the height to align the hinge plates with the relieved areas on the frame.

I sure hope we're done bringing in furniture for awhile. My back hurts. :)

The Morning After

Good morning, everyone, and happy Sunday!

We're a little stiff and sore this morning, from yesterday's unaccustomed activity. But nothing that ibuprofen can't handle. I think.

Now that we've had a couple of rain-free days, the back yard is finally dry enough to mow. And there's a fairly substantial carpet of leaves on the driveway which will require the services of a leaf-blower. Have I mentioned the driveway is roughly 270 feet long?

The newly rocked-in area looks nice, and has changed the appearance of the front yard from "barely reclaimed from the forest" to "somebody lives here and is taking care of the place." I'll get a picture of it today, to show before-and-after shots in a later post.

Anyway, it's time for another cup of coffee. We've only just now gotten both eyes open and focused at the same time.

Have a wonderful day, my friends; thanks for stopping by.

AAR: Yardwork

Rock was delivered at 0845. The dump truck driver just got out of the Marines, after 10 years and "too many" tours in the sandbox. He still had the white sidewalls, although they're starting to fill in. We had a brief but good conversation about the modern military versus the 'Nam era, and jungle versus desert warfare. (Main difference: humidity, leeches, and mosquitoes.)

Some 11,200 lbs of 2" rock later, the job was completed at 1300 hrs.

We added approx. 630 sq ft to the driveway. The rock's 3" deep in the parking pad area, and roughly 2" deep everywhere else. Now we've decided that the rest of the yard work can wait another day.

Lunch followed completion, and now it's time to go hit the recliner, 'cause my dogs are barking! (And hips, knees, lower back, and an occasional cramp in a forearm or two.)

24 May 2016

Ugh

I don't have anything to post this morning.

Between packing, cleaning, moving, cleaning, unpacking, cleaning again, and placing furniture, I've not even had time to address some minor boo-boos formed when I fell down the stairs.

Then ... oh, wait. I haven't mentioned that, have I?

No big deal: I slipped off the edge of a riser a couple of steps above the ground floor, while descending, and went hey presto, found myself on said floor. These things happen. No lasting damage, so it could have been worse.

Then on the way home yesterday, I blew a radiator hose about a block from my driveway. It could have been worse.

And this morning, I have what appears to be a summer cold - watery eyes, sneezing and coughing ... I think I need a day off. So I don't have anything prepared to write about.

I'm in reasonably good shape for the shape I'm in, but humanity will have to survive without me for another day. Y'all take care; thanks for stopping by.

:)

First Night: AAR

So yesterday after work, it turned into a 9 1/2-hour marathon of carrying beds up and down multiple flights of stairs, moving a ton of brass and lead, and the assorted hardware associated with that weight. And there were several dozen boxes of varying sizes and weights.

75 miles of driving, three round trips, and lots and LOTS of boxes.

We got the last bed assembled at 23:30 last night. And I tell you what: pushing all those beds up two flights of stairs got old long before the task was done. Of course, the furniture won't be delivered to the new place until tomorrow, so we've no place to sit except the hearth. By midnight, even that stone ledge felt better than standing around the kitchen.

And boy, did that bed feel good by the time we were able to unwind and fall into it, at 00:30.

So, the after-action report? No traffic noise, no barking downs, no loud neighbors. Just chirping birds right before the alarm went off at 04:30.

This morning, I hurt in places I'd forgotten I had. I'm tired enough that the first two cups of coffee left me a bit nauseous. But I'm going to have another anyway.

11 May 2016

Feeling It Already

We took the first loads of 'stuff' to the new house yesterday, and unloaded three large SUVs full of boxes with which we had played Tetris in order to maximize cargo space.

After unloading the trucks, and running those stairs a few too many times, we went back to the Anchorage location and refilled the trucks. Today's load is heavy. My V6 is wishing it had a couple extra cylinders. :)

The painters will be at the new house today, changing the palette in both daughters' bedrooms and the family room. Meanwhile, we're staging nearly everything in the garage. It seems the landlord at the Anchorage end has new renters champing at the bit to get into the place we fixed up so nicely, a couple years ago.

So we'll attempt to be out by the end of the day on Friday. We originally thought we'd have until Sunday, but the shorter time is voluntary. If we don't get done, we don't get done; not a big deal.

But today we're taking the beds along, and are planning our first night in our home.

So we'll unload the mattresses and box springs, the three SUVs again, and then head back into Anchorage to reload. Again.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Yes, I know it's not a unique experience. So why am I making such a big deal about it? Because we've never owned a house before.

Some may be surprised by that admission, but there it is. We've been transients, and rarely stayed anyplace for more than a few years. In 36 years of marriage, we've moved nearly two dozen times. Much of that was in the early years, and we've been in our current digs for nearly 13 years ... but it wasn't in God's timing for us to buy, until now.

So we're first-time home buyers, and it just happens to be this beautiful Alaskan home in the Chugach Mountains.

We are truly blessed.

It Can't Just Be Me

I've had enough of this posturing, wrangling, contentious, bickering, name-calling Presidential race.
Few of the candidates seem to know how to even act Presidential, and the populist appeal is worn thin.

Candidates, you want my attention? Talk about how you're going to grab this runaway socialist train and steer it back in the direction dictated by the Constitution.

Tell me how you're going to do it, without the meaningless throw-away lines. Tell me how you're going to convince Congress to move in a Constitutional direction, to go along with your campaign promises.

Tell me you'll remember any of the promises you've made, the day following the election. Spare me the platitudes and claptrap. Spare me the empty promises, and the empty suit.

I believe you sincerely want the job. But tell me why I should believe anything you say, because I don't believe you.

Spectacularly Unmotivated

That's how I feel today. The weekends really need to be three - or preferably four - days long, these days.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still doing my job, and they tell me I'm good at it. I just don't really want to. Finding myself tired of having to care about all the recurring little things that make up others' problems, ya know?

Things are getting done. I just want to be ... somewhere else. And vacation's not for another six months.

Hmm. Gonna have to do something about that.

Busy Weekend

Yesterday was Younger Daughter-the-Chef's 19th birthday, so we took her to a new-ish restaurant in town ... but that's a topic for a separate post, still to come.

Here's a hint:

Today my wife and I brought home a load of lumber, to build a 4' x 11', 5' high, shelf - okay, a table -  in the back of the garage. Now we're both going to sit down and watch yesterday's episode of Doctor Who, and eat a pizza.

No, it's not on the list of approved dietary foods, but we've earned it. :)

Pics and restaurant story will have to wait. I have some aches and pains in places I'd almost forgotten about.

Just Tired, I Guess

The consecutive weekends of moving furniture, painting, moving furniture again, assembling new furniture (I didn't mention my wife's display shelving, did I?), removing & then re-hanging art, photos, etc ...

I think it all caught up with us. I'm just gonna sit & stare at the shows we've recorded on the good ol' DVR tonight.

Later, folks; I sure do appreciate you stopping by, as always.

Weekend, Part 3: A Day and a Half

A day and a half, not counting trips out, meals, interruptions, and what-have-you. But dang, she's purty!

And with any luck, the last one I'll have to assemble for a Very. Long. Time.

And now? Dinner, then ... then maybe a little nap. :)

18 March 2014

Sorry

for the light posting recently. Between being tired from moving furniture to & fro (not to mention up & down), I'm pooped. Last night was the first good night's sleep in awhile, and if I can repeat that, perhaps I'll be able to concentrate on blogging again.

On the other hand, blogging is a hobby, and I tend to forget that.

But things are looking up, and we can at least see now what else needs to be done to reach the end of the process.

To that end (the resting & recuperating end, that is) we're leaving for vacation on Sunday. Warm, sunny, palm trees, sandy beaches, and waves rolling in.  I can't wait.

16 March 2014

Busy, Busy Weekend

Yesterday morning's unexpected snowfall (they said we'd get "less than an inch", and then warned it could be "three to six inches."

It was 16" at my house. (Since the local newspeople apparently don't do weekends, I've not seen any reports on an official total for Anchorage.) That ate up the first two hours of Saturday, when we typically do our grocery shopping. You know, before the reavers hit the stores.

After clearing snow & digging out the cars, we spent the next few hours investigating new living room furniture. We're downsizing, and wanted something along the lines of an extended loveseat with center console - cupholders and such - and a recliner. So that's what we wound up buying.

After that, I moved a bunch of things to the first floor. Then we watched a movie.

This morning, we moved the master bedroom to the first floor. The dresser & overstuffed mattress were a bit of a pain, but we got 'er done in a few hours. Then we moved the electronic piano downstairs to the newly-created guest room. I put my guitar & a small practice amp in the newly-created office where our bedroom used to be.

Things are starting to resemble what we've been dreaming about for several years. :)

Then I helped Older Daughter cut some carpet-to-tile transition strips for her new place, and assisted with nailing them in place. While I was doing that, my wife did the grocery shopping.

She's home now, planning a pasta dinner tonight, and the couch is calling our names. I think we're done ... for now.

09 March 2014

Phase 1 Complete

The first floor walls and ceilings are painted. All the blue tape removed from door frames (nine), baseboards, light fixture bases, etc. Switch and outlet covers replaced. You know, the regular drill.

Now we await the carpet-layers, sometime in the next week or so.

Still have to go do the weekly grocery shopping, but - strangely enough - the list is shorter than it used to be. Two people versus four, and all that.

We're a bit tired.

Later.

01 March 2014

Oww

We've been moving furniture, boxes, totes, and so on and so forth, most of the day.

I have aches in places I'd forgotten I had ...

Time to kick back for the evening, methinks.

The Weekend, Part 3

Out with the old:
Samsung 61" DLP* TV

and in with the new:
Vizio 60" LCD TV, on top of the electric fireplace
It's a bit higher. Okay, a lot higher than the old unit, which will take some getting used to. But it sure looks nice.

My bum knee hurts. Gonna go sit down & scroll through the menus, and see what it can do.

p.s. (Anyone local want a 61" TV & stand? Comes with the remote, the stand shown in the first picture above, and a replacement bulb unit. Drop me a line at manager208ATgmailDOTcom, and we can talk.)

* Digital Light Processor. It was Texas Instruments' alternative to the LCD screen, which leaves you with a very large, bright picture, but the TV is roughly 16" deep from front to back.

The Long Weekend (Updated)

One of our local 'talking heads' said something this morning about "remembering the fallen and those who have served".

No.

Memorial Day (formerly known as Remembrance Day) is about those who died. "Those who have served" are remembered on Veterans' Day.

Yes, they're all worthy of veneration. But - for example - me living with a minor but permanent disability does not compare to giving one's life.

All I ask is that we live our lives in a manner worthy of those who gave their all, and not let their sacrifice have been in vain.

* * * * *

This will be the first weekend this month in which we haven't been either traveling or running like crazy to get everything done. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to some downtime.

Y'all be careful & stay safe.

16 April 2012

Long Day, Tired Day

My brain can't word today. Having trouble stringing words together, at any rate.

My lovely bride & I watched all 10 episodes of "Torchwood Miracle Day" on Saturday evening, and much of yesterday. At the end of #9, around 10 pm, neither of us was sleepy, so we finished the last one at 11:30. This morning, neither of us could wake up.

I spent the morning doing ... well, something-or-other at work, and discovered at lunch time that I couldn't remember what I'd done. Had to do some of it again.

Got the studded tires off the truck today, but still need to get both cars into the shop. The daughters' little car had no summer tires, and I asked the clerk at the tire shop about tires that size. They only had six left, so I wound up buying new tires tonight, too.

But, as Scarlett O'Hara famously opined:
